2024 In Review: A Year To Celebrate (with Cake!)

From January to December we’ve been hard at work to bring you a simple, secure and private cryptocurrency experience. Across the board we’ve fixed bugs, made things faster, easier to use, and safer.

Bitcoin Silent Payments

We’re proud to be the first fully-featured cryptocurrency wallet to support Bitcoin Silent Payments. Silent Payments are one of the largest privacy improvements ever made to the Bitcoin protocol. We’ve received praise across the community, even from the developers behind BIP352 on this feature. More importantly, it marks a step forward for bringing privacy to the Bitcoin ecosystem. Litecoin MWEB

Another exciting update is the integration of Litecoin MimbleWimble Extension (MWEB). Cake Wallet is now the first cross-platform wallet to offer MWEB support. This means users can enjoy enhanced privacy and scalability when transacting with Litecoin.

Ledger Support for Various Cryptocurrencies

Many of our users enjoyed the security provided by Ledger, but wanted a more private & transparent method of using them. So in 2024 we developed the ability to use Ledger hardware wallets with Cake Wallet. This means you can combine the security of Ledger with an open source, privacy-first wallet. Ledger is available on both iOS (Bluetooth only) and Android with the following cryptocurrencies:

• Bitcoin
• Ethereum
• Polygon
• Litecoin
• Monero

Initial Windows & Cupcake Releases

This year we finished our commitment to being a cross-platform wallet by offering support on iOS, Android, MacOS, Linux, & finally Windows. We also launched a new sidekick app, Cupcake, to offer airgapped security with a secondary phone. We’ll be making improvements to both these releases in 2025. Thank you for the feedback so far!

2025: New Year, New Coins, New Safety.

We want to start with some important updates to our communities that have already happened:

We are always exploring new cryptocurrencies to add in Cake Wallet, and we’ve already begun development for Zano & Decred within Cake Wallet. We’re exploring other cryptocurrencies in 2025, so keep your eyes open for updates!

Native Tor Support for stronger anonymity, background sync so Cake Wallet is always up-to-date, and of course Payjoin v2. We have heard all of your feedback can’t wait to make your Cake Wallet experience more seamless in 2025.

Bitcoin Lightning

Doing Bitcoin Lightning with privacy, security, and self-custody is a unique challenge we’re close to cracking. Stay updated in 2025 for more updates on rolling out Bitcoin Lightning into the Cake Wallet ecosystem!

Software & Hardware

Finally, we want to revamp our desktop experience and polish up bugs and UI inconsistencies. In regards to hardware, we’re working closely with Foundation and Keystone to bring support for both their hardware wallets in 2025.

Monero with Ledger: A Game-Changer for Privacy

We’ve already supported Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Polygon with Ledger in Cake Wallet. Recently, our last major release introduced Litecoin…and for the moment you’ve all been waiting for: Monero is finally here!

This took us a long time to get right. We wanted to make sure the experience was smooth, simple, and follows the strict privacy & security standards we’ve set to protect our users. You can now combine the security of a hardware wallet with the privacy and transparency of an open source wallet like Cake Wallet. All of this can be done via USB (Android only) or via Bluetooth (iOS & Android) with the following Ledger devices:

• Ledger Nano S (Android-only since it has no Bluetooth)
• Ledger Nano X (Android & iOS)
• Ledger Flex (Android & iOS)
• Ledger Stax (Android & iOS)

Seeds Are Now Even Harder To Lose

We don’t access your seeds, we can’t see them, and we don’t want to see them. Your money will always be yours in Cake Wallet. Unfortunately, this comes with the necessary drawback of users needing to manage their own seeds. (aka, not lose them.)

We’ve already developed numerous fail-safes to prevent users from losing their seeds, but we wanted to take it a step further.

Cake Wallet version 4.22.0 introduces an updated UI to make seeds a bit more manageable for people, and we’ve renovated our seed verification flow to require users to go through a simple one-tap seed verification to ensure seeds are properly backed up!

As always: Your reminder that Cake Wallet will never ask for your seeds. If you share your seeds with anyone, expect them to steal your funds! Likewise, if you lose your seed, expect it to be gone for good - so keep good backups!

Icing On the Cake

As with any Cake Wallet release we’ve made many other changes to keep the app running smoothly.

• The Haven project has unfortunately been shut down, so we’ve begun prepping its removal from Cake Wallet. We encourage all users with Haven to proceed cautiously and migrate their funds as soon as possible!
• As always, we’ve addressed numerous bugs and made several enhancements to improve your overall Cake Wallet experience. Most notably we made fixes to Monero, Ethereum/Polygon, Solana, and made more improvements to Litecoin MWEB.

Conclusion

With this latest release, Cake Wallet continues to be a leading privacy-focused cryptocurrency wallet. We were the first major cross-platform Monero wallet, and the first to implement new privacy tech like Silent Payments for Bitcoin and MWEB for Litecoin. We’re also proud to be open source to help push the entire commmunity forward. Litecoin with Ledger: A Game-Changer for Security

We’ve already supported Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Polygon with Ledger in Cake Wallet, but as we previously promised we’re launching another top requested cryptocurrency: Litecoin.

This now allows you to combine the security of a hardware wallet with the privacy and transparency of an open source wallet like Cake Wallet. All of this can be done via USB (Android only) or via Bluetooth (iOS & Android) with the following Ledger devices:

• Ledger Nano S (Android-only since it has no Bluetooth)
• Ledger Nano X (Android & iOS)
• Ledger Flex (Android & iOS)

No hardware wallet? No problem.

Cake Wallet now supports reading QR codes for airgapped wallets. This enables people to more securely store their funds offline, with similar security philosophies found in hardware devices like Ledger.

Many users have an old device (like a retired phone) which is a prime candidate for becoming an offline, airgapped wallet for users needing even higher degrees of security. This feature, in conjunction with our new air-gapped companion app, Cupcake, allows you to securely manage your Monero funds offline.

Cupcake is already live on the App Store and Google Play Store with F-Droid going live soon, but it should only be used for testing in its current beta state. As with any beta, expect bugs and please report them to us so we can continue optimizing the experience!

Icing On the Cake

As with any Cake Wallet release we’ve made many other changes under-the-hood to keep the app running smoothly.

• We’ve made significant strides in improving the MWEB peg-in and peg-out processes. This enhancement provides a smoother and more efficient way to interact with MimbleWimble Extension Blocks. Thank you everyone in the Litecoin community for the positive feedback on MWEB so far - we’re happy to bring novel privacy protections to our users!
• We’ve revamped the buy/sell flow to make it easier and more convenient than ever to purchase and sell crypto directly within Cake Wallet.
• As always, we’ve addressed numerous bugs and made several enhancements to improve your overall Cake Wallet experience.

Probably the most exciting update is the integration of Litecoin MimbleWimble Extension (MWEB). Cake Wallet is now the first cross-platform wallet to offer MWEB support. This means users can enjoy enhanced privacy and scalability when transacting with Litecoin. Enabling and using MWEB is of course a piece of cake:

1. Go into your Litecoin wallet
2. Tap enable MWEB.
3. Hello, privacy.

Wallet Groups: Organize Your Wallets with Ease

To help users better manage their wallets, we’ve introduced the ability to create wallet groups. This allows you to create wallets for different cryptos (i.e. Bitcoin, Litecoin, and Ethereum) from the same seed and group them together. This makes backups easier as you can save one seed and restore your wallets from it. Keep your eyes open for Monero support coming soon.

Bitcoin Silent Payment Enhancements

Our Silent Payment feature, designed for private Bitcoin transactions, has received several important improvements in this update. We’ve focused on enhancing speed, reliability, and usability to continue to provide you all with a private experience. We’ve been seeing many reports of people reporting much faster sync times and improved usability, and we hope these changes in 4.20.0 will improve even further!

Monero Improvements: Icing on the Cake

For Monero users, the update includes sending improvements and address generation refactoring, which is currently in testing. These enhancements aim to streamline the Monero transaction process and improve security.

Expanded Exchange Options with StealthEx and LetsExchange

We’re continually searching for exchange partners to make sure our users receive the best rates with speed and security. Swaps will continue to improve.

With MWEB, we now have two privacy-first technologies not found elsewhere:

• Silent Payments for Bitcoin
• MWEB for Litecoin

Tor is one of the most important tools for digital rights and user safety! When using Tor:

Our friends at Foundation recently changed their license for their Tor library to be under MIT - meaning apps like ourselves are able to integrate their library for our users.

With just a few lines of code (and some testing & working out any bugs of course) we will be able to offer even more privacy protections to our users. This means Cake Wallet will offer the following privacy enhancements:

Bitcoin BIP39

It’s been a long time coming! From here on out, all new wallets will utilize BIP39 by default. You can still enable the electrum seed type through the advanced settings page. You can do this while creating a new Bitcoin or Litecoin wallet by clicking ‘Advanced Settings’ when you’re assigning a wallet name.

Bitcoin Passphrase

We heard your feedback and worked diligently to introduce a new security feature: Bitcoin Passphrases. Put simply: A passphrase adds a word to your seed requiring you to have your seed and your passphrase. This means even if someone gets access to your seed, they won’t be able to restore your wallet.

• This is great for security
• Warning: This means you need to be extra careful. You need a safe place to store your seed and your passphrase. You need both data points to restore your wallet. If you lose your passphrase you will lose your funds.
• You can enable this in the same menu we referred to earlier. While creating a wallet you can select ‘Advanced Settings’ when you’re assigning a wallet name. There you will see the optional setting to utilize a passphrase.

Silent Payments Syncing

We don’t want to promise any specific speed gain, but we’re continually improving sync times for Silent Payments. Many of you should notice substantial speed improvements while scanning! It’ll only get better from here. We’re pushing new territory and still the first major wallet to support both sending & receiving of Silent Payments.

Monero.com Specific Update

Removal from Google Play Store: Regrettably, the Monero Wallet App has been removed from the Google Play Store due to its perceived similarity to Cake Wallet. While we are appealing this decision, we want to ensure that our users have continued access to the app during this process.

Download Options: For the time being, you can still download the Monero Wallet App through alternative means. The .apk file is available for direct download, or you can use Fdroid, a trusted repository for free and open-source Android apps.
